But once you get into rehearsal you have to relinquish thoughts like that and just try and tell the story. 'Of course, it is very flattering to be asked to do that role because of everything that is attached to it. Tennant, who played Romeo at the RSC in 2000, has said of appearing in Shakespeare's great tragedy: 'Hamlet is often regarded as the acme of acting to test yourself against, which isn't a particularly helpful thought, to be honest. He will star in the Christmas special and another three specials in 2009 but is not confirmed for the next full series of the hit BBC1 sci-fi show, due to be screened in 2010. Tennant drew more than 10 million viewers to the series finale of Doctor Who last month. The production will stay at The Courtyard Theatre until mid-November, before moving to the Novello Theatre in London from December to January. He continued: 'I rate Tennant very highly, but I wouldn't put him in the absolute front rank of contemporary Hamlets.' In The Independent, Paul Taylor awarded the production four stars and called Tennant's display 'an extremely captivating performance', saying he is 'adept at most aspects of the role but he excels when the prince becomes a prankish provocateur'. Giving the production four stars, he said this is a Hamlet of 'quicksilver intelligence, mimetic vigour and wild humour' calling Tennant an 'active, athletic, immensely engaging Hamlet'. The newspaper's Michael Billington wrote: 'He is a fine Hamlet whose virtues, and occasional vices, are inseparable from the production itself. The Guardian, on the other hand, praised Tennant as 'the best Hamlet in years'.
